VELO explained: flavours, strengths and previous names

What happened to Mighty Peppermint, Ice Cool and Berry Frost? A clear guide to the main VELO flavours, nicotine values and pouch formats.

Illustrative VELO product montage showing mint, berry, mango, orange and liquorice variants

Freezing Peppermint, Crispy Peppermint, Green Spearmint and Icy Berries are familiar VELO names. If you have followed the brand for a while, you may also remember Mighty Peppermint, Ice Cool, Witty Spearmint or Berry Frost. Several name changes mean that a familiar flavour can now appear under a different name and in different packaging.

The wording after Freezing Peppermint matters in particular: the version without a suffix, Ultra and Max contain different amounts of nicotine. Icy Berries also comes in several versions, including EU, Swiss Edition and Mini.

This guide explains the main flavours, connects previous names with current ones and makes sense of nicotine values and pouch formats. It helps distinguish similar product names without turning the subject into a technical exercise.

VELO and its best-known flavours

People often use “VELO snus” to mean the brand’s tobacco-free nicotine pouches. Traditional snus, however, contains tobacco. Although the small pouches look similar, they belong to different product categories.

The VELO range includes mint, fruit and berry flavours, alongside liquorice and citrus profiles. It also includes nicotine-free Zero versions. Tobacco-free and nicotine-free therefore mean different things. Nicotine is addictive; the absence of tobacco does not make a product harmless.

The following overview covers six frequently mentioned variants. Nicotine amounts per pouch have been rounded to make them easier to read. The figures relate to the versions described in the Swiss shop range; products sold in other markets can differ.

The nicotine value and format are part of the full product description. Freezing Peppermint Max, for example, is a different nicotine variant from Freezing Peppermint without a suffix. Crispy Peppermint Mini also has different figures from the Slim version.

Freezing Peppermint, Ultra and Max: the differences

All three Freezing Peppermint variants have a peppermint and menthol profile. Their main difference is the amount of nicotine. The versions compared here all use Slim pouches, with 20 pouches and 14 g in each can.

Freezing Peppermint10.915.64/520 / 14 g
Freezing Peppermint Ultra14205/520 / 14 g
Freezing Peppermint Max16.8245/520 / 14 g

Freezing Peppermint

The version without Ultra or Max contains approximately 10.9 mg of nicotine per pouch, with a concentration of 15.6 mg/g. Its previous names include Freeze X-Strong and Mighty Peppermint. The nicotine value helps identify this particular line when comparing it with an older can.

Freezing Peppermint Ultra

Ultra contains 14 mg per pouch at 20 mg/g. Previous names include Freeze Ultra and Mighty Peppermint Ultra, or Mighty Peppermint with a 14 mg label. Some manufacturer pages now use Freezing Peppermint 14 mg, while the shop uses the Ultra suffix.

Freezing Peppermint Max

Max contains approximately 16.8 mg per pouch at 24 mg/g. Its naming history includes Freeze Max and Mighty Peppermint Max. Freezing Peppermint 17 mg is another name used internationally. The shop version described here contains 16.8 mg per pouch.

Ultra and Max both have a 5/5 rating in the shop, despite containing different nicotine amounts. The suffix and milligram value therefore tell you more than the dots alone. Sharing a mint flavour profile does not make these three variants interchangeable either.

Crispy Peppermint and Green Spearmint compared

Crispy Peppermint and Green Spearmint both belong to the mint range. Crispy Peppermint is described with a peppermint and menthol profile, while Green Spearmint has a spearmint/menthol profile. These names describe flavours, rather than nicotine amounts.

The Crispy Peppermint Slim version described here contains approximately 10 mg per pouch at 14.3 mg/g. Each can holds 20 pouches and 14 g. Its previous names were Ice Cool Slim and Ice Cool Strong; many people still remember the shorter name Ice Cool.

Green Spearmint contains approximately 6 mg per pouch at 8.6 mg/g. Its Slim can also holds 20 pouches and 14 g. Earlier names include Mint or Mint Slim, followed by Witty Spearmint.

Nicotine content is therefore a clear distinction between these two versions. Standard Freezing Peppermint and Crispy Peppermint are closer in nicotine amount, at approximately 10.9 and 10 mg per pouch, but belong to different naming lines.

Mini products with similar names have their own figures. Crispy Peppermint Mini is not simply the same portion in a smaller can. Bright Spearmint Mini also belongs to a different line from Green Spearmint.

Icy Berries: from Berry Frost to today

Icy Berries combines blueberry, raspberry and blackberry flavour notes with mint and menthol. Berry Frost was the previous name of the Icy Berries line and was also sold in Switzerland.

EU and Swiss Edition are important distinctions today. The Slim versions described here contain the same amount of nicotine per pouch. Their differences are the number of pouches and the total contents of the can.

VariantPouchesCan contentsmg per pouchmg/g
Icy Berries EU2014 g10.915.6
Icy Berries Swiss Edition2316.1 g10.915.6

The Swiss Edition therefore contains three additional pouches. These figures do not make it a different nicotine level: both versions contain 10.9 mg per pouch at 15.6 mg/g. Swiss Edition should not be read as meaning more nicotine per pouch.

There is also Icy Berries Mini (Swiss Edition), with 20 smaller pouches, 10 g per can and 6 mg of nicotine per pouch at 12 mg/g. This Mini version has its own specifications, separate from the two Slim editions.

Which VELO products have changed their names?

A current VELO name can connect to a familiar older flavour. The table below shows the main naming chains. Ultra, Max and the nicotine amount are especially important with Mighty Peppermint, because that name has been used for several strengths.

Breezy Mango Zero—Tropical Mango Zero

These are naming lines, rather than a guarantee that recipes have remained unchanged in every country and every year. Nicotine values and formats can vary between versions, so they also matter when comparing an older can with a current one.

The same distinction applies to Mini. Ice Cool Mini leads to Crispy Peppermint Mini, while Ice Cool Slim belongs to the Slim line. Spiffy Spearmint Mini is now Bright Spearmint Mini, rather than Green Spearmint.

More VELO flavours and product lines

Beyond its familiar mint products, VELO covers several fruit, berry and citrus profiles. The flavour overview illustrates these groups.

Illustrative overview of VELO mint, berry, tropical, citrus, special and Zero flavour groups
The illustration shows flavour groups. The particular product information determines the format, nicotine content and Zero designation.

Berries and grape: Icy Berries combines several berry notes with mint and menthol. Other names in this area include Ruby Berry, Blue Raspberry, Icy Cherry, Dark Blackcurrant and Purple Grape. Purple Grape appears in both Mini and Slim formats, so the flavour name alone does not identify the pouch size.

Tropical fruit and citrus: These profiles include Tropical Mango, Orange Spark, Sour Lime and Arctic Grapefruit. Tropical Mango Slim and Tropical Mango Ultra share a flavour name but contain different nicotine amounts: approximately 6 mg and 14 mg per pouch respectively. The suffix is part of the distinction here too.

Other profiles: Wintery Watermelon is a watermelon line, Salty Liquorice has a liquorice profile and Zesty Elderflower has an elderflower profile. Names such as these describe flavours; they do not form a shared nicotine-strength category.

The Shift line includes Cool Peppermint, Hot Dragonfruit, Hot Grape, Hot Peach and Hot Spearmint. Mango Flame Heating and Orange Spark Tingling also use wording that describes a flavour concept or sensory impression. Hot, Cooling and Tingling are not reliable indicators of nicotine content.

Mini, Slim and Zero: what do the labels mean?

Mini: a smaller pouch format

Mini describes smaller pouches, rather than a fixed nicotine level. Bright Spearmint 4mg Mini, Simply Spearmint 4mg Mini and Sour Lime 4mg Mini each contain 4 mg of nicotine per pouch, for example.

Purple Grape Mini and Wintery Watermelon Mini each contain 5.95 mg, Icy Berries Mini (Swiss Edition) contains 6 mg, and Crispy Peppermint Mini contains 7.15 mg per pouch. Nicotine amounts therefore differ within the Mini range too. Versions sold in other countries can have different figures.

Slim: a narrow pouch shape

Slim describes the narrow shape of a pouch. The Freezing Peppermint variants compared here, Crispy Peppermint, Green Spearmint and both Icy Berries EU and Swiss Edition use this format. The same shape does not mean the same flavour or nicotine amount.

Pouch counts are not automatically the same either: Icy Berries EU has 20 Slim pouches, while the Swiss Edition has 23. Format and can contents are separate details.

Zero: without nicotine

Zero identifies nicotine-free pouches in the VELO products described here. Examples are Crispy Peppermint Zero Slim, Wintery Watermelon Zero, Tropical Mango Zero Slim and Purple Grape Zero.

Zero therefore describes a different feature from Mini or Slim. A product can be both Slim and Zero. Equally, a tobacco-free VELO pouch is not automatically nicotine-free: the particular version must be labelled accordingly.

VELO nicotine strengths made simple

mg per pouch gives the amount of nicotine in one pouch. mg/g gives the concentration: the amount of nicotine in one gram of the product. The two figures refer to different quantities and cannot simply be treated as the same number.

The per-pouch figure is particularly straightforward when comparing individual portions. At the same concentration, a larger pouch can contain more nicotine than a smaller one. The mg/g value alone therefore does not give a complete comparison between Mini and Slim.

Dots or strength levels are another way of presenting the range. Snuskingdom uses a five-level scale, while manufacturer packaging and pages can also use six-level scales. These ratings are not directly equivalent. The milligram values provide the more precise numerical comparison.

Freezing Peppermint Ultra and Max show why: both are rated 5/5 in the shop, but contain 14 and 16.8 mg per pouch respectively. A strongly cooling flavour is not a substitute for a nicotine value either. The figure on a can describes its nicotine content, rather than automatically stating how much the body absorbs.

The guide Vika, VELO and White Fox compared explains how the brands describe their strengths and pouch formats.

Frequently asked questions about VELO

What is VELO snus?

The term usually means VELO’s tobacco-free nicotine pouches. Technically, they are nicotine pouches rather than traditional snus containing tobacco. The separately labelled Zero products do not contain nicotine.

Which VELO flavours are there?

Familiar names include Freezing Peppermint, Crispy Peppermint, Green Spearmint and Icy Berries. Other examples are Tropical Mango, Purple Grape, Orange Spark, Wintery Watermelon and Salty Liquorice, alongside Mini, Shift and Zero versions.

How do Freezing Peppermint, Ultra and Max differ?

The Slim versions described here contain approximately 10.9 mg, 14 mg and 16.8 mg of nicotine per pouch. All three have a peppermint/menthol profile and contain 20 pouches and 14 g per can.

What was VELO Mighty Peppermint called before, and what is its current name?

The line without an Ultra or Max suffix runs from Freeze X-Strong through Mighty Peppermint to Freezing Peppermint. The other strengths have separate Freeze Ultra and Freeze Max naming lines. The particular nicotine strength is part of the identification.

Is Green Spearmint the successor to Witty Spearmint?

Yes. The naming line runs from Mint or Mint Slim through Witty Spearmint to Green Spearmint. Bright Spearmint Mini instead belongs to the previous Easy Mint Mini/Spiffy Spearmint Mini line.

What happened to VELO Ice Cool?

Ice Cool Slim and Ice Cool Strong are now named Crispy Peppermint. Ice Cool Mini is separately mapped to Crispy Peppermint Mini. The different formats have their own nicotine figures.

Is Berry Frost now Icy Berries?

Yes. Berry Frost is the previous name of the Icy Berries line and was also available in Switzerland. Current versions such as EU, Swiss Edition and Mini are further distinguished by format, pouch count and nicotine amount.

What is the difference between Icy Berries EU and Swiss Edition?

EU contains 20 pouches and 14 g per can; Swiss Edition contains 23 pouches and 16.1 g. Both Slim versions described here contain 10.9 mg of nicotine per pouch at 15.6 mg/g.

What do the VELO strength figures mean?

mg/g gives the nicotine concentration, while mg per pouch gives the amount in one portion. Dots add a rating. Because the shop and manufacturer can use different dot scales, milligram values give a more precise direct comparison.

Which VELO products are nicotine-free?

The Zero versions described here: Crispy Peppermint Zero Slim, Wintery Watermelon Zero, Tropical Mango Zero Slim and Purple Grape Zero. Mini and Slim alone do not mean nicotine-free.

Conclusion

With VELO, the flavour name, nicotine strength and format belong together. Freezing Peppermint, Ultra and Max differ in nicotine content, while Crispy Peppermint and Green Spearmint have their own naming lines and values. With Icy Berries, the edition label primarily identifies which can and pouch count are being described.

Previous names help connect familiar lines with current ones: Mighty Peppermint leads to Freezing Peppermint, Ice Cool to Crispy Peppermint, Witty Spearmint to Green Spearmint, and Berry Frost to Icy Berries. Understanding those connections makes the current names easier to follow without treating different variants as identical.
